Our Breeding Goals
At Iron Maple Farm, our goal is to raise Nigerian Dwarf goats that truly offer the total package—healthy, high-quality animals with great temperaments and strong dairy potential. We focus on breeding goats that meet the Canadian Goat Society’s breed standards, with an extra emphasis on traits that matter in a working dairy herd.
Dairy production is a big part of what we do here. We milk our goats twice a day for our own use, so good udder structure, strong milk lines, and reliable production are non-negotiable. We’ve carefully selected our breeding stock based on conformation, genetics, and personality—because we believe a good goat should be both productive and a pleasure to work with.
Every breeding we plan is intentional, with the goal of improving each generation. Whether you’re looking for a quality home milker, a solid foundation doe or buck, or a friendly addition to your farm, we’re proud to raise goats that we’d be happy to keep ourselves.

How We Plan Our Pairings
We don’t leave breeding up to chance. Each pairing is thoughtfully selected based on a combination of conformation, proven milk production, and genetics. We study each doe’s strengths and look for a buck who will complement her—whether that’s improving udder attachment, boosting production, or refining structure.
We also pay close attention to temperament and personality. A goat that’s easy to handle and gentle around people is just as important to us as one that milks well.
Health & Nutrition
Healthy kids start with healthy parents. All of our breeding goats are on a balanced diet that includes:
- High-quality hay and pasture
- Grain and mineral supplements designed for dairy goats
- Seasonal vitamins (like selenium and vitamin E) especially important during breeding and pregnancy and copper.
We monitor body condition closely and provide extra support for does during late gestation and early lactation. Goats receive regular hoof care and monitoring for parasites (treated as needed based on fecals). We maintain closed-herd biosecurity practices and test annually for Johnes and CAE.
Our Focus on Dairy Production
As a working homestead, we milk our Nigerian Dwarfs twice a day—and we know what makes a good dairy goat. That means we select for:
- Correct, well-attached udders
- Easy-to-milk teats
- Steady milk production with good butterfat content
We track performance in our herd and are always looking for ways to improve each generation. Our goal is goats that are not only beautiful and correct—but also productive and practical for small-scale dairy use.
Frequently Asked Questions
When are kids usually born?
Most of our kids arrive between April and June and September and October. We have some does who kid in the spring and some in the fall.
How long is a goat’s pregnancy?
About 145–153 days from the breeding date. We calculate and post due dates for all planned pairings.
How do you confirm pregnancy?
We rely on observation and changes in the doe’s body condition, but we also use ultrasound or blood testing to confirm pregnancy when needed.
Do you sell kids?
Yes! We typically have a waitlist, and reservations open once pregnancy is confirmed. To be placed on our waiting list, please fill out our Goat Reservation Application.
Our Commitment to Health & Biosecurity
We take herd health seriously. All of our breeding stock is tested annually for Johnes and CAE and monitored for signs of CL. We only buy animals from tested/closed herds, quarantine all incoming animals and follow best practices to keep our herd healthy and thriving.
When you buy from us, you can be confident you’re getting a well-cared-for animal with strong genetics and a solid foundation.
Interested in Our Genetics?
If you’re looking to improve your herd with our Nigerian Dwarf genetics, we’re happy to discuss potential sales or future breedings. We offer kids or breeding stock from these lines.
